Listening to Whispers

If you have an Apple Watch, you might have received a notification at some point that says you are in a loud environment. Whether you are at a concert, football game, or around screaming children, one feature of the Apple Watch is that it will alert you when you are in an environment that could cause temporary hearing loss.

Have you ever noticed life can be loud? Amongst the busyness, the heartache, the celebrations, and the worries, our lives can get so loud. Not only are Apple Watches alerting us with notifications, but it seems we have reached a point where so many distractions and noises have clouded our minds. Our spiritual lives can become clouded as well when we forget that God’s blessings and faithfulness sometimes come in gentle whispers.

Are we listening to the whisper?

Psalm 107:29 says, “He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.”

Have you ever watched a movie where the main characters are at sea, and the waves are crashing against the boat? The people on board begin to panic. They do what they can to protect themselves while the waves get stronger and the water becomes fiercer. Can life not feel the same way?

Crashing waves come in the form of dysfunctional families, job losses, losing friends at school, and so much more. These and more are loud noises in our lives, which reduce the likelihood of hearing a whisper.

God’s Whisper is Louder than the Crashing Waves

Crashing waves against a boat make a loud noise, as does the storm out in the sea. The lightning flashing around the ship and the roaring thunder are enough to make anyone think that hope is lost. But what is even louder than our present surroundings is when God calms the storm to a whisper.

When the frightening noise is gone, and it is easier to see God’s power and mercy on display, His whisper becomes louder. When the storm brings refinement and redirection in your life, it is then that you notice that God’s command calms the sea and brings peace.

Listen to the whisper and remember the One who is in control never leaves you in storms forever.
